Jews, Muslims, pork and liquor?
I had Jewish instruction as a boy, but I’m an atheist.
I know many freethinkers, atheist and leftists who used to be Jewish.
Every single one of them eats pork and drinks, not ceremonial wine like in the religion, but a nice shot of tequila once in awhile (except for me – I have a bad stomach and CAN’T drink).
Yet my left-wing and free-thinker friends who are former Muslims, STILL don’t eat pork or drink.
Why do most (in my experience) ex-Jews seem to do these things against their former faith, but most (again, in MY experience) ex-Muslims don’t?
Do the prohibitions have stronger social roots in Muslim communities?
I think it’s cultural. It’s possibly due to the fact that most Muslims haven’t been exposed to secular American culture as much or as long as most Jewish people have.
