Rally To Restore Sanity Skewers Pundits And Gets Enormous Presence
The hotly envisioned “Rally to Restore Sanity” kicked off Saturday on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The event, the “Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear,” was eagerly awaited and crowds of people were estimated at over 200,000. The rally lasted for several hrs and had numerous speakers and musical acts. The rally centered on a theme of not taking sensationalist media seriously and introducing more rationality to the national discourse.
A benediction was how the 'Rally to Restore Sanity' begun
The "Rally to Restore Sanity " after introductions from Stewart and Stephen Colbert, started with a Benediction by Father Guido Sarducci, the fictional priest from Saturday Night Live played by Don Novello. Stewart and Colbert made their comments while there were numerous acts involved with music as well for the rally. An evil Kinevil suit was what Colbert sported at the beginning. Of course, American Flag pullovers were worn by both of them at one point. Musical guests incorporated Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow, The Roots and Tony Bennett, however the large number was a bit of a contrast. Stewart brought Yusuf Islam, formerly Cat Stevens, on stage to perform "Peace Train.". Ozzy Osbourne had been then invited by Colbert to sing “Crazy Train” and “Love Train” was sung by O’Jays at the end.
What the press needs to say
The point of the rally, above all other things, was to take shots at sensationalist media. Clipps of those like Glenn Beck and Keith Olbermann played while making fun of them between musical numbers and appearance from Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Politico reports that Olbermann commented on Stewart on Twitter. He said Stewart had “jumped the shark” on there. Similar commentators were largely dismissive of the rally. More than 200,000 attended the Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart Rally.
Abrupt conclusion
It had been unusual at the conclusion when Comedy Central all the sudden started broadcasting the Simon Pegg film “Hot Fuzz” instead of the conclusion of the rally. On his Twitter, he said he was sorry and had no idea it would happen.
