Dubai Hotels During Ramadan

Being an Islamic country, Dubai always observes the festival of Ramdan. Ramadan is cited as the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and lasts for 29 - 30 days. Muslims ar expected, during the time of Ramadan, not to eat or drink or have sex between dawn and dusk. Dubai hotels have good deals during the month of Ramadan as it is considered off-season.

Be sure that you are au fait with the tenets of Ramadan and do not inadvertently cause offence by ignoring the strict taboos in place at this time. One of the strictest rules in place regards the eating and drinking in public which is not permitted. During Ramadan, women are expected to dress very conservatively with no bare shoulders, no tight clothes and the minimum of make-up. As expected, alcohol can only be bought from 7pm through to 1am in hotels and restaurants. Many businesses in Dubai observe Ramadan by either working shorter hours or by closing completely. Some shops will be closed during the day but will open at dusk and trade through to the early hours.

Iftar or the breaking of the fast happens at dusk. This is usually announced with the firing of cannons and then friends go from house to house exchanging greetings and inviting each other for a meal. Some bigger hotels in Dubai, lay on special ‘iftar feasts’ which are popular with both tourists and locals alike. Ramadan food is generally vegetable-based as Ramadan is a time for cleansing and honouring the body. Meat, although allowed, is only eaten in moderation, as Ramadan is about cleansing the body as well as the mind. Muslims sit down at iftar to a meal consisting of soup, usually vegetable-based and a variety of salads, olives and pitta bread and apricot juice, cranberry juice or mint tea as the drink to accompany it. The meal is generally eaten without any form of entertainment as this is a time to talk with your friends.

Although you have to observe certain protocols during Ramadan, it is still an interesting time to visit Dubai. As it’s an off-season during Ramadan, there are many cheap hotel deals available to entice tourists. Many restaurants offer special meals and the airlines offer cheap packages.

Guilty: Hollywood’s Verdict on Arabs After 9/11

$11.90

“Nothing will be the same again.” Americans scarred by the experience of 9/11 often express this sentiment. But what remains the same, argues Jack G. Shaheen, is Hollywood’s stereotyping of Arabs. Before 9/11, Shaheen dissected Hollywood’s equation of Islam and Arabs with violence in Reel Bad Arabs, his comprehensive study of over a thousand movies. Arabs and Muslims, he showed, were used as short…
