Let’s Learn About Bangladeshi Bibaha by Sana
Bibaha is a Bengali word, which means 'marriage'. Although in the western countries the tendency of living together without wedlock is increasing, the traditional rituals and significance of marriage is alive in many countries.
Among the countries that still follow the traditions with respect to marriage, Bangladesh is the prominent one. It is also a country where most of the people are Muslims, and according to Islam, Bibaha is a must for every adult. Similarly, for every marriage, patro patri is essential. Patro patri is not a single word and these have been derived from Bengali word. Patro means groom and patri means bride.
Most of the Bangladeshi marriages are the long term events. Usually, it takes around 4-5 days to complete the marriage rituals and practices. In spite of the lengthy event with several customs, nobody gets bored because of its glamour and interesting ceremonies. The religious part of bibaha takes place in patri's house and then both patro patri visit each other house to complete all the procedures of a bibaha.
However, current custom practices of Bibaha are somewhat different. Even though some of the families love to arrange for the bibaha without sacrificing any ritual, due to time constraint they do prefer reducing the length. They decide whether it will be a long term program or a short one day program. Bangladeshi bibaha has always been very colorful and attractive.
Everything changes with the passage of time, and the role of patro patri is also changing. In the past, Patro patri have nothing to do for arranging the bibaha. They were literally inactive and were preparing themselves for a new life after bibaha. Their parents, relatives, guardians and neighbors had to take all the responsibilities. The reason behind was that they were very bashful, in particular, the bride. Moroever, they were not provided enough freedom to decide or arrange for the Bibaha.
Patro patri also takes part in organizing the bibaha. In majority of Bibaha, it is only the patro patri decides maximum about their wedding arrangements starting from the wedding venue, arrangements, costumes, length of events, etc. Patro patri do shopping for them, decide about their bridal wear, help the families in making list of the guests, and obviously they also decide the place of their honeymoon. Probably the ever changing culture and education have been playing a major role for this change.
Being one of the cultural oriented countries in the world, Bangladeshi bibahas are very successful as the rate of divorce is very low in Bangladesh, over other countries. The main reason attributes to the successful marriage life of the Bangladesh people their respect towards culture and tradition. Bangladeshi Bibaha insists the patro patri on "Compromise" and "Fulfilling The Responsibilities of Each Other". Further, these are the principles of Islam and in fact, if any couple follows these instructions they will be a happy couple as long as they live.
