What is Our Greatest Weapon Against Exploding Underwear? by Bill Watson
I could not resist that title after learning the terrorist aboard the flight to Detroit had the bomb ingredients sewn in his underpants. Growing up with all brothers, exploding underwear has an entirely different meaning, but this is now serious business. What happened on this flight is the key to stopping future terrorist attacks. Everyone today is saying that our security failed, I say just the opposite.
A passenger jumps over a seat, chokes a would-be terrorist, and stops him from blowing up a plane with 278 people aboard. The flight was headed to Detroit from Amsterdam and the attacker waited until minutes before landing to make his move. The government's response to this, "we have to beef up security!" This is after already spending zillions and hiring kazillions of airport security personnel. How can they miss such an obvious lesson?
That passenger is more than a hero, he is our greatest weapon against terrorism. Not him alone, but all of us. Since 9/11 I have said that if you want to put a face on a Homeland Security poster, I will send you one of mine. The war on terror is not a conventional war. This enemy attacks civilians and it is civilians who have to fight back.
The enemy we face today is worse than Hitler. Hitler wanted to eliminate a race and subjugate the world to his plan. Al Qaeda wants to take out an entire culture, populated with all races, and subjugate the world to an Islamic theocracy. They don't have the numbers for an all out attack, so they use suicide bombers and small weapons to kill children and the innocent.
Al Qaeda knows they cannot defeat our military. They count on us being weak as a nation and their violence, they believe, will break our spirits. The key to Al Qaeda attacks is surprise. In the past they only had to outsmart airport security. Now they have to plan for quick passenger reaction to their every move. And that is the greatest defense of all.
The 9/11 attackers used box cutters to hijack the four planes. Can you imagine a couple of guys getting up and trying to do that on a plane today? They would be mauled, tackled, bitten, pinched, and maybe a twisted nipple to boot. Even the elderly are ready to fight.
As heroic and wonderful as this is, we must remember that Al Qaeda will change their venue. Homeland Security will continue to throw more resources into airport security while Al Qaeda's next target may be a church or elementary school. Every person must be alert and ready to act against these evil attackers.
