UAE/IDB: Islamic Development Bank insures more than $3 billion of deals by Michelle
ABU DHABI (United Arab Emirates), 3 Jumada Al-Awwal/25 March (IINA)-More than US$3 billion (Dh11.02bn) of business contracts were indemnified by the spread credit and investment insurance arm of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) last year, Abu Dhabi Media corporation's first English-language pamphlet, The National.
Driven by petition to guard against the universal financial disaster and regional variability, the value of deals covered ascended 63 per cent jump from 2010, when $1.9bn of contracts were sponsored by the Islamic Corporation for the Insurance of Investments and Export Credit (ICIEC).
"We had a very virtuous year in 2011," said Owais Diyan, the head of processes in the Dubai agency of ICIEC.
"We have had the international financial calamity where insolvencies have hit the gable, and that gave a tonic to exporters seeking credit vindication insurance. We also had the disputes in the Arab world, and both of these united to give credit coverage a boost", he added.
The strong recital also came amid a year in which ICIEC untied an office in Dubai to foil its existing HQs in Jeddah. The Dubai office has assisted to protect a growing number of agreements.
ICIEC also attributes the flow to its unrolling of new insurance merchandises for political peril. One is a non-honoring of sovereign compulsions policy, which covers banks against the non-payment by governments.
The insurance was taken out by banks protecting two organization developments in the UAE recently. One is a $90 million water purification plant in Ras Al Khaimah and the other is a $200m arrangement scheme in Dubai.
Demand has also been robust for ICIEC's contract prevention policy, another new insurance product shielding independents against unfair annulment of projects by governments or a native firm. Turkish edifice firms functioning in Libya have shown particular curiosity in the policy. ICIEC signed a contract with the Turkish Export Bank to provide political hazard insurance to firms in the country.
"What happened with Turkish freelancers in Libya was that when conflict broke out they lost close to $1bn of tackle and projects which were halfway finalized and were spoiled by war and they didn't have insurance to shelter them," Mr. Diyan said. "The events have briefed them and they are looking to have covered in imminent." Another reason for the hasty rise in ICIEC's insurance obligations was a change in strategy last year. It permits non-IDB countries to take out assurance for craft with IDB members.
The euro-zone calamity has led many European organizations to shift their focus to faster-growing souks such as Africa and the GCC.
"We are seeing a lot of approval from European and Far Eastern-based constructors who want credit insurance shelter to sell to this district," he said.
