Ramadan And Dubai Hotels
Islam is the official state religion of the UAE and accordingly, Ramadan is strictly observed in Dubai. Ramadan is cited as the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and lasts for 29 - 30 days. One of the stipulations of Ramadan is that during the hours of daylight, Muslims must not eat or drink or have sex. Regarded as being off-season tourism wise, Ramadan is the time to look for cheap deals at Dubai hotels.
Be sure that you are au fait with the tenets of Ramadan and do not inadvertently cause offence by ignoring the strict taboos in place at this time. One of the strictest rules in place regards the eating and drinking in public which is not permitted. During Ramadan, women are expected to dress very conservatively with no bare shoulders, no tight clothes and the minimum of make-up. As expected, alcohol can only be bought from 7pm through to 1am in hotels and restaurants. During Ramadan, a lot of businesses either close completely or else have shorter working hours. Some shops will be closed during the day but will open at dusk and trade through to the early hours.
When dusk falls, ‘Iftar’ or ‘breaking the fast’ happens. This is usually announced with the firing of cannons and then friends go from house to house exchanging greetings and inviting each other for a meal. Many restaurants, especially in the bigger hotels, host ‘Iftar feasts’ for the tourists as well as the locals. Ramadan food is generally vegetable-based as Ramadan is a time for cleansing and honouring the body. Only small amounts of meat are permitted and this is generally organic, halal meat. Muslims sit down at iftar to a meal consisting of soup, usually vegetable-based and a variety of salads, olives and pitta bread and apricot juice, cranberry juice or mint tea as the drink to accompany it. What is lacking during the meal is any sort of musical entertainment as there is no live music or dancing allowed.
Ramadan is an exciting time in Dubai, in spite of all the restrictions. As it’s an off-season during Ramadan, there are many cheap hotel deals available to entice tourists. Many restaurants offer special meals and the airlines offer cheap packages.
