New Improvements on the Ubiquitous Recycling Bins
Recycling bins that are to be used for the London Olympics this 2012 are being redesigned to make them truly a part of our modern times. A London bases business has recently developed bombproof recycling bins with LCD screens on them that show breaking news.
Two former students from the London School of Economics established the company who created this which they call Renew. This project's goal is to install one hundred bombproof recycling bins in the financial district of London before the Olympics open in July.
According to the CEO of Renew, Kaveh Memari, “There has been hardly any innovation in this space. Rubbish bins have just been a box with a hole.” These new design of recycling bins are transparent and are slightly elevated from the ground via a pole. A plastic rucksack is attached to it for the recyclable items and trash. As a result, bombs and dangerous items which can be deposited to them can be easily seen given that the rucksacks are transparent.
Due to the issue of threats expressed by the Irish Republican Army and other terrorist groups, London City authorities became reluctant in placing recycling bins on busy parts of the area like Underground stations. The same also happened during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics where a bomb that killed scores of individuals was placed in a trash receptacle in the Athlete’s Park. Fifty two people were also killed when a bomb placed on a bin near the entrance of the Underground Station at Aldgate in East London detonated on the 7th of July in 2005.
According to the company, their take on waste management is not a simple thing. He stated “We don’t think this is just solving issues with recycling or bins. Yes it helps to go green and it helps to be safe, but this is also about usefulness.”
During the situation when an attack really happens, these bins which have LCD screens installed on them can help provide information to other people. Memari also expressed, “One big criticism from the 7/7 attacks were the lack of communication. The phone networks were down and there was nothing coming to people. But (with the Renew Recycling Bins) we could turn our screens into an emergency broadcast channel.”
The Steering Committee of the London Olympics itself lauded the concept, saying that Renew recycling bins screens will play a very large role in making the London Olympics more peaceful. Congestion of traffic and other emergency situations are other examples of scenarios in which these additional channels of situation can help on.
The recycling bins cost about 25,000 British pounds each and have been created through funding from the Qatari Islamic Bank. A material that is four times stronger than steel was used in creating them. Renew pays for the bins and their maintenance while the access to the LCDs can be opened by the content providers. The London Olympics will be safer, cleaner, and better with the use of these bins. With the Olympics as its first customers, Renew is now currently in discussion with Manhattan City and Singaporean authorities to make this new waste container available in their areas as well.How to make someone to be a Muslim (Mail box , Yusuf Estes)
