Working From Home And Public Holidays, Planning Your Time Off For Best Effect.
Today is a bank holiday and it is drizzling. Even if it had not been wet I would tend to be reluctant to make any travel plans. Whilst it is good to make the most of days off the fact that I work from home makes this just about meaningless. Because I work from home I am able to plan my holidays much more easily than many people. The consequence is that I don’t need to take a public holiday off if I don’t wish to. Because much of my work is online based, doing Online jobs of one sort or another, I am able to function very effectively if the rest of the nation is having a day off.
There are a couple up sides to all of this. First is that I can get on with some duties in the expectation that I will not be interrupted. The phone is not likely to ring as business colleagues and clients expect that I am having time off. So deep concentration Work from home tasks like writing can be undertaken without interruption and I am able to get as much completed on one public holiday as two average work days. I could even use this fact to justify having not one but two days off in lieu later on!
Secondly I get to avoid the nuisance of public holiday traffic. It appears that wherever you go on a public holiday today you share the road with the rest of the nation. This is particularly galling when the weather is fine, it is so frustrating to be stuck in a traffic jam when the sun is out. Which brings me on to the final point. No one seems able to tell us what weather conditions will be like on a public holiday. But, because I work from home I am able to in reality arrange my own personal public holidays at the last second and ensure that I get a break when the weather is fine.
