What is the basis of Muslims slaughtering animals in the name of newborn, some calls Akika, in Islamic Laws?

In Bangladesh Muslims traditionally slaughter one goat for a baby girl and two for a baby boy during a feast arranged for the new born, usually within a month of the birth, which they say - "AKIKA". If this traditions is in accordance with Islamic Laws? Or, this is something that was generated locally in Bangladesh for whatever reasons? Is there anything in Islamic Laws similar to this tradition, which has been made obligatory for all Muslims that have the solvency? Appropriate referral to Islamic books would be appreciated.

There no law about it. You do it if you can afford it. I guess your desire to celebrate the birth of a child is only normal, right? And the slaughtering of a goat or cow is done on everyday basis, right? The reason for Aqiqah is basically to buy a goat, and feast with your neighbours or even given to the poor. Its not a must, just a celebration. Of course centuries ago, people dont call the catering service to have a feast, they would have a sheep or a cow to prepare for a feast. People now just follow traditions.
